The first direct pedestrian and cycle path connection is bringing the Rothenburgsort and HafenCity districts in Hamburg-Mitte closer together. The abutments for the new bridge between the Elbbrücken with the public transport hub of the same name and the Elbpark Entenwerder are now being built. The client is the municipal Billebogen Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG on behalf of the Ministry of Transport and Mobility Transition. The Oberhafenkanal currently separates HafenCity and Rothenburgsort.

The initial construction work for the western connection of the future bridge link was completed in November 2024. Preparations for the construction of the western abutment have already begun here. Preparations and construction work for the eastern abutments of the bridge at the tip of Elbpark Entenwerder will also take place from February 7, 2025. The construction site and the associated construction road will be built first. The bridge superstructure is expected to be lifted into place in late summer 2025. The approx. 135 meter long and approx. 7 meter wide structure will then visibly span the mouth of the Oberhafenkanal into the Norderelbe for the first time with a sweeping and dynamic gesture (design: schlaich bergermann partner (Stuttgart) with gmp Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (Hamburg)). A bi-directional cycle path and a footpath run above it. Recreation areas are also planned at the bridgeheads.

Elbpark Entenwerder remains usable

The preparatory construction work for the engineering structure of the pedestrian and cycle path connection under the Neue Elbbrücken to the connection point to the Entenwerder bridge was largely completed in 2023/2024. For the construction of the eastern abutment, the top of the Entenwerder park will be used over an area of approx. 2,200 square meters. A construction road will be set up through the park for the duration of the work. The park will remain accessible and usable during the construction work. The bridge will be completed in late summer 2025 once the bridge body has been installed. In addition, the surrounding path connections will be established, in particular to the Elbbrücken underground and S-Bahn station. Following the completion and opening of the bridge by mid-2026, increased pedestrian and cycle traffic is expected between HafenCity and Elbpark Entenwerder . In order to take this prospect into account at an early stage, the path between the bridge and the Alexandrastieg on Entenwerder is to be widened from the current 3.0 to 4.0 meters. The extension will be carried out in coordination with the monument protection authority as a water-bound path surface.

Green open spaces at the end

Following the construction work, the green open spaces on both sides of the bridge will also be restored. The new 1.6-hectare "Zweibrücken Park" with a total of 70 new trees will be created on the banks of the Elbbrücken . The construction of the Entenwerder bridge is being funded by the special city and state program (federal cycling promotion).
