Another important component of the Elbe continues to take shape.
The results of the architectural competitionEntwicklungsgesellschaft by the Billebogen Entwicklungsgesellschaft have now been announced:
A hybrid timber structure designed by the architectural firm knippershelbig GmbH (Stuttgart) in collaboration with DKFS Architects PartGmbH (Aachen) won over the jury. The “Bridge over the Billeis intended Rothenburgsort a direct connection between the Hammerbrook Rothenburgsort neighborhoods for cyclists and pedestrians.

 

Andreas Kleinau, Chairman of the Executive Board of Billebogen Entwicklungsgesellschaft:

“The Neuer Huckepackbahnhof neighborhoodHuckepackbahnhof as a catalyst for the Billebogen the surrounding urban areas. The plans for the bridge over the Bille the neighborhoods more attractive and draw greater attention to their qualities.”

The new bridge—the first hybrid wooden bridge of this scale to be built in Hamburg—serves as a key link within the future green corridor. At the same time, it connects important development areas in Billebogen, including the PARKS site and the Neuer Huckepackbahnhof neighborhood. Its appropriate height also ensures that the Bille navigable.

Director of Urban Planning Franz Josef Höing (Department of Urban Development and Housing):

“The winning design calls for an elegant wooden bridge. With its curved shape, it blends seamlessly into the landscape while also creating a striking new feature in the cityscape. The design combines aesthetic quality with responsible use of resources and durable construction. This approach won over the jury and is sure to delight the people of Hamburg as well.”

The competition decision marks an important milestone for the project. The design will now be further developed and implemented by the State Agency for Roads, Bridges, and Waterways (LSBG) during the subsequent planning phases. Construction is currently scheduled to begin in the spring of 2028.
