With the opening of the “ Entenwerder ” bridge, the HafenCity and “ Rothenburgsort ” districts are now directly connected for the first time. The new pedestrian and bicycle bridge spans the mouth of the Oberhafen Canal where it flows into the “ Elbe ” and, in particular, improves access to the “ Elbbrücken ” subway and commuter rail station.
With a length of 135 meters and a span of 75 meters, the structure is one of Hamburg’s largest pedestrian and bicycle bridges. The bridge was built by Billebogen Entwicklungsgesellschaft , on behalf of the Ministry of Transportation and Mobility Transition. The Federal Ministry of Transportation supported the project through the “Stadt und Land” funding program.
Senator for Transportation Dr. Anjes Tjarks describes the new connection as an important step toward the mobility transition and the development of livable neighborhoods. It directly links HafenCity and Rothenburgsort , making the Elbpark Entenwerder —as well as the diverse offerings in HafenCity—more accessible to residents of both neighborhoods.
The federal government also emphasizes the importance of the new connection. According to Parliamentary State Secretary Ulrich Lange, good transportation policy is most clearly evident at the local level: The bridge makes everyday life easier for many people and brings neighborhoods closer together. Through the “City and Country” funding program, the federal government is supporting municipalities and states in further expanding infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.

“With this bridge, we are not only creating a new, important connection for pedestrians and cyclists between Rothenburgsort and HafenCity, but also restoring access to the subway for the southern part of Rothenburgsort for the first time since 1943. The next step is to improve the pathways within Elbpark. Among other things, we will widen the path between the new bridge and the existing bridge at Alexandrastieg to four meters to better accommodate increased pedestrian and bicycle traffic and to direct the various traffic flows so that everyone can reach their destination safely and easily.”
The bridge was designed by schlaich bergermann partner (sbp) in collaboration with gmp— von Gerkan, Marg und Partner . Construction began in February 2025. The bridge segments were preassembled on the Peute and hoisted into place in September 2025 using a floating crane. This was followed by the completion of the structure and the construction of the adjacent paths and open spaces.
The route is designed so that cyclists can take a short path through the northeast section of Elbpark Entenwerder and then connect to Bike Route 2. The direct path through the park remains reserved for pedestrians.

With the completion of the bridge, the surrounding open spaces will also be further developed. The Elbpark Entenwerder will form the southern end of the Alster-Bille-Elbe green corridor. In addition, the new “Park Zweibrücken” is being created along the banks of the Elbbrücken , featuring approximately 70 new trees.
